New Now – Festival for Digital Arts

  • New-Now Festival 71 Kokereiallee Essen, NRW, 45141 Germany (map)

NEW NOW artistically explores the transformation from industrialisation to digitalisation and asks: What challenges do we face today in the face of the ecological crisis? How can we solve the consequences of human action in an interdisciplinary way? How can art and culture create new fields of resonance? Are plants our technology of the future? How can we make new presences conceivable within planetary boundaries and go beyond human perspectives? We invite you to reflect together on the interplay between humans, nature and technology.

Hypernatural Forces:

Under the festival theme "Hypernatural Forces" we look at the forces that shape nature and the digital. Scientists, activists, coders and artists will show what new ecosystems, biotopes and cycles develop when flora and fauna, technology and humans enter into dialogue. We undertake a journey between reality and simulation, driven by the forces of the venue itself — once the largest coal mine in the world, exemplary of modernity and industrialisation, but also the exploitation of the environment.

NEW NOW takes place in the Mixing Plant of the Coking Plant at Zollverein — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and icon of industrial culture. Today, instead of coal, Zollverein promotes ideas and becomes a production site for digital arts with NEW NOW. As part of the remote residency programme, seven artists are invited to produce new site-specific works that will be shown, surrounded by industrial architecture, in the impressive spaces of the coking plant from the 1st of June till the 6th of August 2023.
